Hawkins files suit in broken staking case
Poker pro Maurice Hawkins has filed a counter-suit after a Tallahassee lawyer sued him over a broken staking arrangement.
Hawkins’ lawyer, Scott Jay Feder of Coral Gables, filed the counter-suit on Aug. 25 in Leon County. The suit asks for $15,000 in damages plus a yet-undecided amount via a slander claim based on comments they say Hawkins’ former backer, Hal Lewis, posted statements on Twitter and the internet. The comments were related to claims Lewis made in a suit filed earlier this summer.
Hawkins, of Lantana, has more than $2.8 million documented tournament winnings. The backing arrangement began after the pair met at a tournament in Jacksonville and ended in mid-2016.
On the advice of his lawyer, Hawkins declined further comment.
