Conine poker event set for Aug. 7 at Seminole Hard Rock

The Jeff Conine Celebrity Poker Classic has a new home: The event is at 7 p.m. Aug. 7 this year at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood.

The tournament started at Calder Casino in 2012, then moved to the Isle Casino and Racing for two years when Calder closed its poker room. First prize has usually been an entry into the World Series of Poker Main Event in Las Vegas (or the $10,000 cash equivalent), but because the Seminole Hard Rock has a big event in August, it can cross-promote. So this year instead the winner gets $5,000 and the Hard Rock has donated the prize of a seat into the Aug. 11 Seminole Hard Rock Poker Open. Entry normally costs $5,250. A silent auction runs from 7-9 p.m.

But the point of the tournament is less about poker and more about raising money for Conine’s Clubhouse, a home-away-from-home for parents whose children are staying at the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood. More than 9,000 families have used the clubhouse. A golf tournament and other events also help fund the facilities. For example, Gulfstream Park is contributing $5,000 after the third race on July 2, using funds raised from the Pegasus race earlier this year.

Conine, now a Miami Marlins broadcaster, played 17 seasons in the majors, including on both Marlins’ world championship teams. For more information, go to
