Separate room for table games, video poker @ Dania

A quiet room beyond The Casino @Dania Beach main slot floor has electronic craps, roulette and (rarely seen in Broward) baccarat, flanked by about 50 video poker machines. Most are the multi-use Game King models, but the casino also has Super Hand Poker, a new game released by IGT currently offered only at Dania.

The game is a twist on video poker. Players who max bet five coins (easy to do because denominations are 5, 10 and 25 cents) across three pay lines are dealt five cards, formatted with pay tables from their favorite video poker game. Super Hand offers Jacks or Better, Double Bonus, Double Bonus, Bonus Deluxe, Triple Double Bonus and Deuces Wild.

Players then pick one of the hands to play  — i.e., decide what to throw away and what to keep. The machine then draws to that optimal hand you’ve chosen. I tried it, and enjoyed having three shots at turning my two pair into a full house, for example, and the one time I was dealt three of a kind, got three shots at hitting quads. (Alas, they all missed.) WizardOfOdds.com puts Super Hand at a 95 percent-plus payback, when played with correct strategy.

Dania officials caution, though, that there’s only one machine currently at the casino. So it might be occupied. The game likely will be offered soon at other casinos.

Meanwhile, assistant general manager Shawn Veerasammy points out the 118-machine high-limit room, situated next to the room containing the electronic table games and video poker. The high limit room is in a remote corner (high rollers dislike people peering over them like vultures) and has as many up-to-date games as any venue in South Florida. Games include Cleopatra, Top Dollar, Monopoly and Wolf Run, with most starting at $1.

The casino’s deli, Roasters’ n Toasters, is in place on the first floor. It is the third of a deli chain that also is in Aventura and Pinecrest, and I enjoyed the brisket sandwich this week, with fries that I would rate well-above-average to very good. The Luxe Buffet, situated on the second floor is about finished with construction.

Jai-alai is in its summer season, meaning four dates per week through June 30. Times are: 4 and 10 p.m. Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and 4 p.m. Saturdays. The Casino @ Dania shares the same simulcast channel as dog tracks in Naples and at Magic City Casino in Miami. (The three have the same owners.) Managements staggers the time of the three to allow for total coverage, but you also could frame it that the schedule means that whatever time of day you want live action, you can get it.  Naples, for example, often sets performances at 11:45 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6: 30 p.m. on various days. Live racing returns to Magic City/Flagler in June.
