About Nick Sortal
They say that I, Nick Sortal, am South Florida’s best journalist when it comes to covering gambling. OK, I’m the only person who covers gambling. I started at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel in 1985 and worked in sports, features and news before becoming the gambling writer in 2007, just as horse tracks, dog tracks and jai-alai frontons were adding slots and the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino kicked into high gear.
I like to play $1-$2 no-limit poker, some video poker and dabble in the other games. I’d like to think I’m a journalist first and I’d like to think that the sources I’ve worked with would say I’m fair, even if I was writing something they didn’t exactly like.
I grew up in Southern Illinois, got degrees, in math, news-editorial journalism and advertising, graduating from Southern Illlinois-Carbondale in 1980. I live in Plantation with my lovely bride, Robyn, a former Sun-Sentinel assistant sports editor and Dolphin fan going back to the pre-Marino days. In 1993, I married in to two wonderful girls, both of whom are now in the workforce, and my son is a student at Syracuse University.
